Narwal Freo X Ultra
A highly-rated high-quality, highly-functional Gen 4 robot vacuum and mop that has a new approach to design, the Freo X Ultra is a well-made machine. The price of $1,400 is difficult to swallow however, you can find it on sale frequently enough to make the purchase palatable. The unit is beautiful, and the base station occupies just a small space in a corner of a room.
The design of this robot is able to address a few problems that we've encountered with other robotic mop and vacuum units, like the brushes becoming entangled in hair, and the brush not being able to reach bare floors underneath furniture. The performance of the sweeper on carpets and floors that are not covered is also impressive. The vacuum/mop system is equipped with the highest level of debris pickup, and the mop is able to absorb the bare floor quickly.
The mops utilize a clever system that cleans the edges of walls and around furniture. The robot is able to avoid the bulkier obstacles like toys, food bowls, shoes, and backpacks without any problem. It could get caught or entangled with smaller, less hefty objects like shoelaces, USB cable and pen.
We used this robot to clean and mop a mix of pile rugs, FLOR carpet tiles and hardwood floors in a large, open floor plan. It vacuumed and mops the 90m2 space in 170 minutes using FREO Mind enabled. This is about the average for Gen 4 robots.
A number of features set this robot apart from others in its class. The Freo X Ultra has a number of software, sensors and hardware enhancements designed to keep it at the top of its game. It has been declared to have an autonomy of 3.5 hours in environments up to 260m2.
You can customize multiple features of the Freo app, including the frequency at which the robot comes back to the base station, its mopping frequency and power (silent or smart) and mopping humidity. The app can identify heavily dirty spots and create a cleaning route. It can also dispense detergent, or raise the carpet pads.
Other notable features include a rapid charging battery, a clear display on the robot's underside and a practical dock door that opens easily. The Freo X Ultra is the ideal vacuum and mop for home or apartment owners who want to cut down on their chores, while keeping their homes tidy and clean.
Miele Scout RX3
Miele isn't a joke in the robot vacuuming world and is known for its quality and innovativeness. The new Miele robot is designed to take it to the next level with smart features and top-notch cleaning performance.
The RX3 has a dual-suction system and intelligent mapping that incorporates 3D mapping and camera that transmits an image in real-time to your smartphone. The RX3's powerful four-stage system for cleaning provides excellent dust removal on hard and carpet flooring, while the intuitive side brushes that swing out and dual suction channels clean in corners. Its 8.5 cm height lets it get under furniture that is low. Front cameras and infrared sensor assist in navigating barriers, thresholds and obstacles with ease.
The Scout RX3 impressed us in our tests on how well it was able to clean baking powder around corners and baseboards. Its 2,500Pa suction was weaker than the other robots, however it was still very quiet and swift in its movements. It didn't mop and its removable cleaning pad was a challenge to attach. It also wasn't able to handle dried-on dirt.
The app is on the basic side and lacks features such as multiple cleaning modes and automated scheduling. It does support Alexa, but its voice controls aren't particularly intuitive or responsive. It's also a bit sporadic when it returns to the charging station following an exercise. Other robots can follow a wall or trace a previous route however, the RX3 is a mess until it gives up.
Another issue we faced was with its intelligent features, particularly the mapping function as well as digital keep-out zones. While it did a good job of keeping away from our furniture legs and shoes however, it was easily caught by cables and socks, and it was not able to manage the tassels on rug. This is the reason we decided not to include it in our Best Buy list. The Scout RX3 offers a good price and impressive performance. It's worth looking into as an alternative to uprights that are traditionally used.
