The best models have smart navigation technology and a feature to avoid objects that help them maneuver around cords, toys and other household obstacles.
1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO
The iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO is an excellent robot vacuum that comes with a range of clever features that make it easier to maintain than most competing models. Its automatic bin emptying is among the most useful features we've seen in a robot and it is compatible with hard floors as well as carpets. It's also simple to set up and use with the app that guides you step-by-step through the process. Another notable feature is the ability to go back to where it left off in our tests--it did this for 77 minutes on one cleaning before running out of battery.
The i3+ EVO, unlike some of the other robot vacuums that we tested comes with a self-emptying bin that automatically dumps debris into an external dirt compartment located on the base of its charging once it is fully filled. This reduces hands-on maintenance and helps keep the i3+ EVO from overfilling, however it still requires manually cleaned after each cleaning session. The i3+ EVO dust bin can hold 2.4L, which will last for four to five cleaning sessions.
This model, like the i7 uses state-ofthe-art floor-tracking sensors that create maps. It also allows you to navigate in neat rows. The i3+ EVO can only keep one map, whereas the i7 can store multiple. The i7 is also able to utilize its map to create no-go zones as well as virtual barriers, but the i3+ EVO is not able to do this.
Although the i3+ EVO is superior in picking up debris on surfaces than the other robovacs that we tested but it's not the best for cleaning corners and edges. It's also a bit less gentle on furniture, despite being fairly quiet. It moved chairs away from walls and made some collisions with the sides of our test bed, and it became stuck on cords and toys during testing.
2. Black & Decker Pro Q5

It also does well on carpets and scores an excellent score in our tests of navigation. The only issue is that it's a little noisier than many other models we test and it doesn't do as well in our owner satisfaction and predicted reliability tests.
The Q5 Pro has a very large dust bin of 770ml which means you won't have to empty it as frequently as other 2-in-1 robots. The Q5 Pro's 240 minute running time is also generous when in comparison to other 2-in-1 robots that we tested. When the battery is running low, it returns automatically to its dock where it recharges and then resumes cleaning from where it left off. You can manage the Q5 Pro via the app and also use voice commands using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
This is the first robot we've seen that incorporates 3D mapping. That, combined with some other advancements, allows it to perform exceptionally well during our mopping and vacuuming tests. It is possible to schedule cleanings and set up no-go zones. You can also view the battery's status. The app is simple to use, even though it isn't compatible with Apple HomeKit and that feature is expected to be available by 2025. Apple updated its footnote on its website in the beginning of November to reflect the fact that the feature was delayed until 2025. HomeKit isn't compatible with several other robots, but Siri Shortcuts are.
